At Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, music is one of the ways we preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our primary instrument is the voice of the congregation, expressed in congregational song. We sing music of “all times and places,” finding our songs in the richness of our tradition and heritage, and across the tapestry of contemporary and world music cultures. The hymnals of our church are the main, but not exclusive, source of our song: Lutheran Book of Worship (1978), With One Voice (1995), Evangelical Lutheran Worship (2006), and All Creation Sings (2020).
Our instrumental resources include:
• Pipe organ, tracker action, one manual/8 ranks, by Hutchings-Plaisted of Boston, 1875, rebuilt by Jeremy Cooper of Concord, New Hampshire, in 1979. The organ was relocated to Our Saviour’s from the former Ascension Lutheran Church of Glendale, New York, in 2014.
• Yamaha grand piano, model C5, 1998.
• Harpsichord, French single manual, by Willard Martin of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, 1988.
• Percussion instruments including drum set, congas, and various hand percussion.
Our music makers include:
Children’s Hymn Sing, meets before Sunday School to introduce our youngest musicians to the songs of our church.
Children’s Choir, grades 1-6, practices to learn fundamental music skills through quality children’s choral repertoire and performs for church services.
Youth Choir, grades 7-12, practices to develop vocal and musicianship skills and performs in church services.
Adult song leaders, singers who meet to practice for leadership roles in our congregational singing. We are a church that sings!
